Star Trek: Next Generation - Gulliver's Fugitives Author Keith Sharee An audio book read by Jonathan Frakes Reviewed by Sue The Enterprise is on a mission, to find out what happened to the USS Huxley, a star ship which went missing 10 years previously. Near the place where the Huxley vanished they find a planet known as Rampart. This had been settled by colonists from Earth several hundred years before and forgotten about. Picard contacts the planet's government to ask if they know anything about the Huxley and is met by a wall of hostility, even of disbelief that the Huxley ever existed. A security team comes up from the planet to search for what they call 'contraband'. The crew of the Enterprise are at a loss to know what they're looking for until they discover that on the planet Rampart, books and any works of the imagination are banned. So the planet's mind police look on the Enterprise as a source of evil and sedition, because of its extensive library, especially when Picard explains that they have every book on board, even those that have been banned on Earth in the past. The government and mind police begin to wonder if the Enterprise is in league with their own rebels who are trying to keep literature alive on the planet by distributing pages among the people. A scuffle breaks out. Picard is taken hostage and beamed back to the planet. Data, Riker and Troi follow to try and rescue him. Troi meanwhile has had a peculiar dream, about some strange aliens, which is troubling her. Could there be a connection? And does any of this have anything to do with the Huxley? This was a short (90 mins) but excellent story with a number of twists and turns. It is embellished with sound effects giving a good atmosphere and Jonathan Frakes takes on the different characters well. - o -
