Gemulator Explorer Reviewed by Sue Recently I had an email from someone who'd been onto the SynTax website and noticed the Zak McKraken demo in the SynTax library. He emailed to ask if I still had it and I said, yes, but I didn't know if it still worked because I no longer had an ST. I offered to send him the disk if he'd be able to extract the files and send them back to me on a PC formatted disk but he told me about this useful program instead so I could do it myself. Gemulator Explorer is a freeware program that, among other things, enables you to read non-DOS disks such as Mac, Atari 8-bit and Atari ST disks on the PC. Well, there's handy, I thought, not having had time to get to grips with a 'proper' emulator. The program can be downloaded from www.emulators.com and I've also put it onto the SynTax homepage. You may also need an extra SCSI adaptor to be able to read ST and Mac hard disks, so that's also included, but I didn't personally need it. Basically it opens an Explorer-type window with two panes. The left pane shows all your drives, referenced as MS-DOS files, while the right pane shows their contents. Double-clicking on the bottom option, Non-DOS Floppy on A, opened my Zak disk which I'd popped into the A drive. There were all the files. I must admit I gave a little "Whoop!" of satisfaction. You can create an image from the files and copy them to a floppy, but instead I just dragged them onto the Desktop. I found this worked only when I copied one file at a time which is a bit of a pain but at least I could get to my files again. Evidently the full Atari emulator Gemulator will let you copy more than one file at a time. Very, very, VERY useful! - o -
