NANCY DREW - TREASURE IN THE ROYAL TOWER Solution by Peter Clark Nancy is on a skiing holiday and is staying at Wickford Castle in Wisconsin. Christi Lane, a friend of Nancy's father, owns the castle. A blizzard has closed the mountain and ended her plans for skiing. The game starts with you playing the part of Nancy, writing a letter to George. This goes into your inventory and you can post it as soon as you have found a stamp. Pick up your room key card from the desk. You are in Room 205. Look at your locker card in the desk. You have locker 310 with the locker combination (5-1-7). Take the menu from the top drawer of the dresser and then open the magazine on the table. It will tell you how to take fingerprints. Check the phone for phone messages. Nothing. Go to the radiator and note that something is hissing. Open your suitcase and read the brochure inside. Check your telephone. You have two people that you can call up for assistance. They are Neil on 1-523- 555-4357 and George on 1-523-555-2583. The operator can be obtained by pressing the 0 button. Leave the room and go downstairs using the lift. Talk to Dexter Egan at the Reception Desk. You can ask him about stamps and he will take your letter to post later. Use all the possibilities of conversation with him and offer to help him. You will be given the task of getting some ski boots from the basement. The Ski Rental office is open from 9am - 12pm and 2pm - 5pm. On the way towards the spiral staircase, you will meet Lisa. Talk to her about everything and take a look at the two books in the bookcase. If it is still before noon you can go on down and talk to Jacques twice. You will get the boots. Go and find your locker. It is number 310 and the combination is 517. Turn the dial to the left until it reaches the 5 then press the triangle above the number. Turn the dial to the right until you get the 1, press the triangle again then turn the dial to the left again until you get the 7. Pressing the triangle this time should open the locker but it doesn't. Go back and tell Jacques about it. He tells you that you have been given the combination for locker 311 by mistake. Go and use the combination to open locker 311 and you find that Lisa has not been telling all the truth. You find fake ID and Passports. You also find out that she speaks fluent Spanish. Now go to Professor Hotchkiss's room. Number 214. Use the boots on the door and you are asked to put them down on the floor. Do this and, as you walk away, you hear her pick up the boots and return to her room. Now go to the lift and go to the first floor. The lift gets stuck and you have to find a way out. Look up and you will see a panel in the ceiling. When you are on top of the lift do not try and jump to the ladder but look around until you find a box to stand on. You can now reach the door above. Go down to the Reception Desk and talk to Dexter. Tell him about the lift. He will ask you to go to the Basement and check the circuit breakers. Go to the Basement and open the circuit breaker box. Set the top three switches on the right hand side. To the left of the circuit breaker box is a red lever. This is the lift-reset lever. Pull it once after setting the circuit breakers. Go back up the stairs and you will notice that the upper stair lights are now back on. Ask Dexter about your radiator again. He will tell you that, as you fixed the circuit breakers, he will see that it is fixed. However, he asks you to go to the Professor's room and ask her what she wants for supper. Go back and knock on her door. She asks for Couscous. Go back to Dexter and tell him. He tells you that she must have something off the menu. You should have the menu from your room so go back and knock the door again. Tell her to choose something from the menu and slip it under the door. She chooses chicken drumsticks and you go back to Dexter and tell him. You are now asked to go and tell Jacques to defrost some chicken legs from the freezer. Go to the Basement and tell him to do this. If you see Lisa on the way, ask her about the things that you found in her locker and about the secret tower. As soon as you tell Jacques about the chicken legs, your radiator will be fixed so you can go back to your room and examine it. Pick up the can of oil that has been left by the radiator. Now is the time to do some snooping. Reset your alarm to 8.00pm and leave the room. Go to the lift and go to the Basement. When you are there, look at the lift ceiling and open the panel. You can climb back out onto the lift roof. You should hear the sound of sawing and Nancy will say something about strange noises. When you are almost to the top of the ladder you will see a ventilation shaft with the cover hanging loose. Go into the shaft and follow it until you get the grille that separates you from the Library. Go into the Library and you will hear somebody coming. Go back into the ventilation shaft as quickly as you can and watch Dexter. When he has gone you can come out again. There are a number of things that you must do whilst in the Library. Firstly on a table to the right of the stairs is a book called, "True Stories behind Famous Paintings". Read this then go right again to a dusty table with broken bits on it. Read the Atlas of the United States and you will see the solution to the Globe Puzzle. (90degrees West) Use the brush on the dust, then look at the alarm keypad next to the door and use the dusty brush on it. You will see fingerprints on the keys that Dexter used earlier. In order of darkness they are 3, *, 7, 2. Now find the globe and solve the puzzle by setting the needle to 90 degrees. Lift the top half of the globe and look inside. You will find the answer to the compass puzzle over the fireplace. This is -15, 10, -5. Click over the fireplace to get the compass puzzle. In order to solve it, click to the left or right of the puzzle to move the pointer then click on the green button when you have the right number. You will hear a door opening when the puzzle is solved. Leave the fireplace and go up the stairs. The door that you heard opening was the door to the secret room that you can now see to the left. Go inside and pick up the lighter from the desk. Use it to light the candle. When the candle melts you will find a key. Read the poem on the desk to the right of the candle the turn around and read the Good and Bad books on the other desk. There is nothing else that you can do here for now so leave the Library through the double doors. Go down to the front desk and, if Dexter is not here, look in the drawer behind the desk and take the Library key. Go back to your room and set your alarm to 8.00pm. If you weren't able to get the Library key before, get it now and then go into the Library. The alarm will go off so take two steps forward and then turn towards the alarm and press the code, 3,*,7,2 to turn it off. Now go back up through the ventilation tunnel and down the ladder in the lift shaft to where you hear noises from below. You see a lever that will not move. You must have the oilcan with you, as you now need to use it on the lever. The grating can now be opened and you can go down and left until you find a door with six sliding locks. All six bars must be pulled back in the right order and this will change every time that you use the door. Go through the door and you will find Jacques. Talk to him about everything and he will tell you about a blue medallion and give you his locker combination, 2,6,6,5. Before you go, take the metal spear tip from soldier in the armour. Leave him and go to the locker room in the basement. Open the locker and look at the letter from his fianc‚e, the diamond chart and the blue medallion. As you look at the medallion, you are clubbed from behind and wake up with a headache in your bedroom. Answer the telephone. Jacques asks you what happened. You have to tell him that the medallion has been stolen. Listen to your voice mail. It is Dexter wanting to speak with you. Set your alarm to 8.00am then go and talk to him. Tell him the truth about the red dirt on your shoes and ask him about the garden and the place that his father used to go to think. He will tell you that there is a key in the shed. You will have to leave the hotel through the door in the locker room in the basement. If you meet Lisa on the way, don't tell her too much. Once you are outside you will begin to get very cold so don't hang about, as it could be fatal. Make your way to the shed; go inside and down the steps. Turn to your left and go towards the workbenches. The key is with the screwdrivers on the rack to the right. You can also find a newspaper article about Dexter and the instructions for starting the ski lift. Make a note of these, as you will need them later. Now leave the shed and go back into the hotel to get warm again. Go back into the garden and make your way towards the shed until you are near the No Trespassing sign. Go to the left of the sign and towards the creeper covered wall. Behind the creepers you will find the gate to the garden. You can open the gate by turning the design in the centre of the ironwork. Once inside, go to the sundial and turn it so that the arrow is facing the other way. This will turn the head of the statue that is to the left so that it is facing the wall. You can now see a lever on the back of the head. Pull the lever to open a compartment and reveal a locked box. Use the ornate key to open it and take out the Red Medallion. Now put the box back and return from the garden to the hotel again. Go back to the Lounge and talk to Lisa. She will tell you that she saw Dexter carrying a green ornament out by the shed. If you can't get her to tell you about Dexter, go up to your room and listen to your voice mail. Her message will be the last one and it will tell you that she wants to be friends and wanting to see you. Take it from there and all should be well. Go outside again and look for him. He is not there but, when you try to get back into the hotel, you find that you are locked out. You must try to attract attention before you freeze to death. Go into the shed and use the instructions for starting the ski lift. Set the switches in the correct way and the lift will start. Click on the middle lever once and the right lever twice. Dexter comes out to see what has happened and takes you back inside. When you are safely back inside go to Professor Hotchkiss in Room 214 and talk to her she will ask you a question. You may find the answer in the Lounge bookcase but, if you are stuck, knock on her door again and she will ask you another one. When you get the right answer, she will tell you to meet her in the Lounge between 3.00am and 5.59am. Go back to your room and set your alarm for 3.00am Go down to the Lounge and meet her. Talk to her about Marie Antoinette. She will give you a spare key to her room and allow you to look around while she is out. You have until 5.59am so go to her room now and look around. Read her notes by the typewriter and look inside the briefcase. Read the letter that you find. Now look under the cushion on the settee and you will find a Blue Medallion. On the table is a video camera. Look at her recording until the battery runs out. Take the battery pack and put it on the charger then leave the room. Go back to your room and set the alarm for 8.00am. Go out to the shed in the garden and look on the machine to the right of the ski lift machine. Mind the rat and you will find a Green Medallion. Go back into the hotel to your room and call your friends on the telephone. Listen to your voice mail. Set your alarm to 3.00am so that you can go back into the Professor's room again and watch the rest of the video. Now leave the room and go to the right to where you will find the circular room with the peephole. Look through the peephole using all of the medallions and note the location of the symbols. Red is to the left, blue is to the right and green is below and centre. Now it is time to go to the Royal Tower. Take the lift to the First Floor. Enter the Library and deactivate the alarm system. Go into the ventilation shaft and then down the lift shaft. Use the lever and go down to the door with the six bars lock. Solve this again and then use the skeleton key on the iron gate. Make sure that you have the spear tip from the suit of armour. You will come to a place where there are five chains hanging on the wall. Look at the wall opposite them to see the pattern that the chains must be arranged in to turn the stepping-stones for you. Pulling one chain also alters one other but it is not too difficult to solve. When this has been done the stepping-stones will move so that you can cross them. On the other side you will find what looks like a chessboard. You must place the round pieces on top of the corresponding square ones. Complete them in this order. Blue, Yellow, Pink then White. This will open the stairway all the way to the top. Go to the top of the Tower and through the door. On one wall you will see the Gold Leaf Puzzle. The pieces can be moved around by clicking on them and clicking on the top left hand corner of a piece will turn it. When you have got all the pieces correctly placed, a secret compartment will open and you will find Marie Antoinette's Journal. Look at her portrait on the wall and then at the floor. You will see a pattern with holes in it. The medallions will fit nicely in the outside ones but there is still a gap in the middle. Go back to your room and set the alarm to 3.00am so that you can go down to the Lounge and talk to Professor Hotchkiss. Talk to her about the translations that you saw through the peepholes and give her the Journal to translate. Go back to your room and set the alarm for 3.00am again then go to the Lounge and talk to the professor again. She will tell you that she has done the translation and that she has also discovered Marie Antoinette's Decoder. Go up to her room and read the translation. It can be found to the right of her typewriter. Now look at the decoder, which is on the table to the left of the typewriter. Now it is time to get back to the Tower again. You will unfortunately have to solve the six bar lock and the chain puzzle again to get there. On arrival, place the medallions on the floor pattern. Blue to the right, Red on the left and Green at the bottom. Go and look at the portrait again. You should get a highlighted cursor on the purple rose. If you don't get this then you must have missed something. You must have read Marie Antoinette's book near the staircase in the Library. You must have given the diary to the Professor and asked her to translate it. You must read the translation in her room and the decoder page. You must have looked through the peephole using all of the medallions. Assuming everything is Ok, use the tip of the spear to prise away the tiles of the purple rose and you will find a key. Use the key on the centre of the floor design and a hole appears, then a pillar rises up with the diamond on it. Just as you are congratulating yourself on its find, the thief appears and sprays pepper dust in your eyes. When you have the chance, look for the square protruding block just outside the door on the left of the stairs and press it. This will trap the diamond thief and complete the game. - o -
