Artemis Fowl Available as a book or audio book Reviewed by Sue Artemis Fowl is only 12. He's also a criminal genius. But when he kidnaps a fairy, he takes on a little bit more than he should. Not only is Captain Holly Short, a member of the LEPrecon Unit, a fairy with attitude, she's got a boss who won't let anyone mess about with a member of his team and he's determined to get Holly back safely. Artemis is after fairy gold (and a bit more), aided and abetted by his butler, Butler, and Butler's sister. How can these humans be a match for the world of fairy folk? Craftily Artemis has managed to get hold of one of the fairies' official books which gives away ALL their secrets. He knows just what words to use to prevent them doing him any harm. He thinks he's got it sussed ... but has he? Like Terry Pratchett's elves, these fairies aren't cute twinkly creatures. No, they carry weapons and they aren't afraid to use them! This is the first in a series of books about Artemis. They're aimed at children but this 'kid' thoroughly enjoy the first one and is looking forward to reading or listening to more. Despite the fact Artemis is officially a baddie, you can't help feeling sympathetic towards him. Butler is an interesting character. He and his forefathers have protected the Fowls for generations. As well as the LEPRecon team, there are other fairy folk to meet such as centaurs and trolls. There's also a brilliant dwarf called Mulch Diggums. If you'd ever thought Dwarves tunnel using shovels and picks, think again . Highly recommended and well read by Adrian Dunbar. - o -
