Evolution Available on DVD and video Reviewed by Sue Yes, I've been catching up on films lately. Having enjoyed AI, next I hired Evolution from my local library. Staring David Duchovny (Dr Ira Kane) and Orlando Jones (Dr Harry Phineas Block), it starts with a meteor crashing on Earth from outer space. It ends up in a cavern below ground. Harry is a geology lecturer at the local community college and also the representative for a US Department (he got the post accidentally over the Internet). He has to check out any such events in his area and make an official report. He persuades Ira, biology professor at the same college, to go with him and Ira collects some liquid that exudes from the meteor when they hit it to take a sample. Looking at it under the microscope in his lab, he's amazed to see single-celled organisms moving about it in. By the time he persuades Harry to look, they've been replaced by multi-cellular organisms. Harry can see a Nobel Prize on the horizon, but Ira is more concerned about the implications in terms of evolution. It's happening way too quickly! By now, the military have become involved and cordoned off the site so the duo have great problems trying to grab a specimen they can examine in the lab. They get involved with a local firefighter, who was there when the meteor crashed, and a government scientist as the four of them try to save the world. The next thing is, more strange creatures start turning up in the cavern and in town - first little worms, then larger amphibians. Many of them are very vicious. The only good thing is that none of them can breathe oxygen so within minutes of evolving, they die. So far ... What will happen once they start breathing air? This is a fun film, very entertaining and with some great creatures in it especially the cute animal found in a cupboard that turns out to have some very nasty habits! As always with these sorts of films, I got very annoyed with the military who were typically narrow-minded. Duchovny is good but Jones is brilliant. I haven't seen any other films he's been in but will look out for him in the future. A very funny guy. 7/10 Slows down a bit towards the end and was a bit too far fetched even for me! - o -
