Mimail.J hits PayPal users Last issue I told you about the Mimail.A virus. This spreads to users warning them that their email address is about to expire. Mimail.J aka W32.Paylap is now doing the rounds. It first appeared in late November and is sent in an email that purports to come from PayPal. The email tells you your account is about to expire and asks you to complete a form with personal details including credit card info. Craftily, it warns the recipient not to send details by email as this isn't secure but to use the form provided. If you do return the completed form, you get a confirmation email that also appears to come from PayPal. Not only does the email act as a scam because it can steal info from you, it also harvests email addresses from your address book and propagates itself through them. I haven't had this email myself but I understand it looks completely genuine. Similar viruses and emails are being sent looking as though they come from eBay, Citibank and Amazon. Another one looks as though it comes from Swiftpay, another online payment company. It tells you you've been sent money and asks you to log onto their site and open an account. This of course needs bank or credit card details and the site isn't the real Swiftpay site but one in another country which is fraudulent. Remember, genuine companies will never ask for sensitive information in this way. - o -
