The game can be described as a simulation of an interview for a programming job, consisting of multiple choice questions that come from an unknown source. During that initial gaming session, I felt that the interactivity had been crippled and that the questions were horribly bland. Most often, the game would end abruptly, informing me via a smug and misspelled message that I had no chance of getting the job. Ugh!\b As time went by, however, my stance toward HRS changed. At first, I jokingly defended the game to friends ... and then I realized that there was more than a grain of truth to those jokes.\b There's no doubt that HRS is infuriating; to me, this means that it \(works\). The game captures an element of sheer absurdity that's present in a great many job interviews: The applicant is searching, not for the answer that she most believes in, but for the answer that will please the interviewer the most. As a work of IF, HRS captures that absurdity vividly while also providing a little puzzle for the player to solve. Moreover, I now believe that a conversation menu system provides an excellent means of communication between player and game.
