I regularly get asked how to get a domain name and webspace so here's a potted guide based on my own experience.

I recommend UK2.net because I got my webspace from them and I've found them reliable and helpful.

First think what domain name you'd like. For a UK site I'd recommend going for one that ends .co.uk especially if you offer a local service because then it's clear you're in the UK. Sites ending .com are more often USA commercial and they also cost more.

Go to www.uk2.net
. This info is correct as of 19.2.08

Click on the tab for 'Domains'. Type the domain you're considering eg fredbloggs into the little text entry box for 'Get your domain name today' and press 'Go'.

On the next screen you'll see if the domain name (eg
www.fredbloggs.co.uk) you want is free (it will have a green circle with a tick on it next to its name) or has been taken. If it's taken (red circle with a no entry symbol) you'll have to try another name. If it's free have a brief celebration then click in the box next to 'Register for 2 years £5.98' to put a tick in it. Press 'Continue'

You also want web space and hosting. Select 'Home web hosting' and decide whether to go for one or two years (at reduced cost). Click on whichever you want, then 'Continue'. Ignore the options on the next page, click 'Continue' again and on the next page 'I am a new cutomer'.

From here on, you're on your own! Complete the contact details, press 'Continue' and eventually you'll be prompted for your credit card details etc for payment.

If you want me to buy a domain name etc for you I can do this through UK2.NET for their price + 20%. Later purchases eg renewing services, adding extra features are at cost + 10%. Or to do it yourself here's a mini-guide.
