How to upload your own webpages using Terrapin FTP Some people prefer to do their own or don’t have a choice because they are with an ISP like UKOnline that won’t let non-subscribers access one of their FTP sites. If this is the case I can email the website files to you and if you need help uploading them, here is a potted guide. I recommend Terrapin which is a British FTP program and very easy to use. You can download it from www.tpin.com – you can use it for 30 days free of charge but after that you’ll have to buy it. However you should buy it anyway because it is such a great program and not expensive (about £25) So either click on the ‘download’ link under Terrapin FTP, then ‘Download Now’ There are full instructions on the page. Or to buy it immediately select the ‘Purchase a Product’ tab, select ‘click here’ then pick the payment option you prefer. Their online store is by far the quickest way. So
once you’ve installed Terrapin, run it. The window has six panes. In use they
contain: Essentially all you have to do is log onto the server for your site and drag files from your PC onto the FTP server. It’s as simple as copying files from one folder to another on your PC. Let’s look at this in detail. Save the web files onto your hard disk in a suitable place eg a folder called ‘My Website’ under ‘My Documents’ Start Terrapin. Go to the ‘Server’ drop down menu and select ‘New Connection’. Use the details your web hosting service has provided. Type in the name of the FTP server, your Username and Password. Press ‘Connect’. This should take you online. When you’re online your FTP site will be detailed in the middle two windows as described above. Use the bottom left window to find the folder you saved the web files into. Select the folder. Its contents will be shown in the bottom right window. Find the file(s) you need to upload. Select them and drag them into the window above. You’ll see the transfer progress in the top right window. When it’s finished, go to the ‘Server’ menu and select ‘Save’. I just use the default name for the server settings. Go onto your website and admire your new pages! If you have problems give me a ring. |
